Conservatory roof options: the choices after the roof type

Once the roof itself is settled there is a second set of decisions — daylight, finishes and what goes into the ceiling. They change the room more than people expect.

  • Rooflights and lanterns for daylight overhead
  • Tile and finish options matched to the house
  • Downlights, fans and speakers built into the ceiling

Daylight

How much sky do you want?

The choice is not glass roof or solid roof. It is how much daylight comes from overhead and where you put it.

A single lantern over a dining table, a run of rooflights along the garden side, or a fully glazed section over one end — each puts light in a different place and changes how the room is used.

On a solid roof this is the decision that stops the space feeling enclosed. Get it right and you have the warmth of an insulated roof and enough daylight to sit without lights on.

  • Roof lanterns sized to the room
  • Rooflights positioned where the light is needed
  • Solar-control glass in every overhead option
  • Fully glazed sections within a solid roof

Benefits

What else you choose

  • Tile finish

Chosen against your existing roof so the room ties into the house.

  • Ceiling finish

Plastered and painted in whatever colour the rest of the house uses.

  • Downlights

Positioned before the ceiling goes up rather than added awkwardly after.

  • Ventilation

Opening rooflights and vents to move warm air out at high level.

  • Speakers and fans

Anything you would put in a normal ceiling can be built into this one.

  • Internal pelmets

Concealed lighting and a clean junction where the ceiling meets the frames.

Worth knowing

Decide it before the ceiling goes up

Most of these choices are cheap while the roof is open and expensive once it is plastered.

Downlight positions, speaker cables, a ceiling fan point and the pelmet detail all want settling before the ceiling is boarded. Adding them afterwards means cutting into a finished ceiling.

We go through the list at survey so it is on the quote rather than becoming a conversation halfway through the build.

Questions

Roof option questions

Can’t see what you need? Call 01342 410079 and we’ll answer it properly.

Ask us a question

Can I have rooflights in a solid roof?

Yes, and we usually recommend it. They give you controlled daylight overhead without the temperature swings of a fully glazed roof.

Can the tiles match my house?

Usually very closely. We choose the tile against the existing roof at survey rather than from a sample sheet.

Can I have downlights in the ceiling?

Yes. Positions want deciding before the ceiling is boarded, because adding them afterwards means cutting into a finished ceiling.

What about ventilation?

Opening rooflights and high-level vents let warm air out at the top of the room, which makes a real difference in summer. Worth specifying at the outset.

Can I add a lantern to an existing solid roof?

Often, but it means opening up the structure and forming a new upstand, so it is far cheaper to do it as part of the original job than afterwards.
