Taking one out
Assume it is holding something up
The cheapest thing you can do before removing a wall is find out what it carries. The most expensive is not to.
A structural opening needs a beam sized by calculation, bearings designed to carry it, propping while the work is done and a building control sign-off at the end. None of that is optional and none of it is where you save money.
We arrange the engineer, make the application, form the opening and make good afterwards, so it stays one job with one person responsible for it.
- Structural survey before anything is priced
- Engineer’s calculation and building control application
- Propping, steel and bearings done properly
- Plastering and flooring made good afterwards

What we build
Walls we take on
Garden walls
Brick and block boundary walls on proper footings, with copings and piers.
Retaining walls
Designed for the load and drained behind, which is what stops them failing.
Structural openings
Knock-throughs and wide openings with the beam calculated and signed off.
Internal walls
Stud and block walls to divide a room, insulated for sound where it matters.
Repairs
Cracked, bulging and failing brickwork cut out and rebuilt.
Signed off
Building control involved from the start on anything structural.
Worth knowing
Retaining walls fail from behind
A garden wall holding back ground is a structure under constant load, and most of the ones that fail were never drained.
Water building up behind a retaining wall exerts far more pressure than the soil does. Without weep holes, a drainage layer and somewhere for the water to go, it will eventually push the wall over however well it is built.
We design the drainage as part of the wall rather than as a detail. It costs very little at the time and it is the difference between a wall that lasts and one that leans.
